WEST JORDAN — A West Jordan man has been recognized for quick thinking and compassion after he stepped in to stop an elderly woman from losing over $23,000 to a sophisticated phone scam.
Mauricio Campos was working when the woman walked in, and he said he noticed something was off immediately. He works at a small quick market.
"She seemed all frantic, panicked, in a worried tone," Campos recalled. "I was looking at her like, 'Are you OK?' And she said she was. Then I heard someone on the phone yelling, 'Do this, do that.'"
Campos says the red flags were impossible to ignore. The woman had been convinced by a scammer — posing as law enforcement — to withdraw thousands of dollars in cash and deposit them into a bitcoin ATM.
What the scammer didn't know was that Campos had personal experience with this kind of crime. His own mother had fallen victim to a similar scheme.
"Just listening to the way he was telling her, 'Make sure you scan your ID, make sure you put in your Social Security number, put all your personal info into the computer so I can see it,'" Campos said. "The way he was demanding, almost pleading — acting like it was urgent — it just wasn't right."
The woman resisted even as Campos tried to intervene, believing she was already speaking with real police.
West Jordan Police Officer Rhonda Shields said that's common.
"She thought she was already on the phone with police," Shields explained. "She told him she was fine. But he questioned her more, urged her not to do it. They called police, officers responded, and yes — it was a scam."

Police say Campos' actions likely saved the woman from financial devastation.
"We love to see that," Shields said. "We wish it happened more often. We wish we were aware that those people were out there, intervening and making this huge of an impact."
At this week's West Jordan City Council meeting, officials paused their agenda to honor Campos for his courage and awareness.
"We just want to recognize him for that and say thank you," a city official said as the room erupted in applause.
