SALT LAKE CITY — Filmmakers from across the country and around the world are in southern Utah as the DOCUTAH International Film Festival returns for its 16th year.
The three-day festival, running through Saturday, Feb. 28, at the Megaplex Theatres at Sunset, features 57 new documentaries and live discussions with the people who created them.
Inside the theater, audiences settle in as filmmakers introduce their work from stories ranging from environmental challenges to deeply personal journeys. Many of the films are premiering in southern Utah, giving viewers an early look at new documentaries from across the globe.
"The films that we show go really in depth into the reality of certain issues and circumstances that normally you don't get in surface article or surface film," said Tisa Zito, program director for DOCUTAH.
In addition to screenings, filmmakers participate in post-film discussions, giving audiences the chance to ask questions and learn about the creative process behind each project.
"Some of the best things about this is it gives our students an opportunity to meet and work with professional filmmakers. They get to see the inner workings of how a festival is put together," said Carmen Wilson, executive director of DOCUTAH.
Free DOCTalk Masterclasses at Utah Tech University are also part of the festival lineup. Organizers said the goal is to strengthen connections between filmmakers, students, and the community through documentary film.
