PROVO — A Provo woman is facing criminal charges after police say she had grocery bags on the hood of her car obstructing her view when she hit and killed a 2-year-old girl last week.

Nereyda Yessenia Miranda Montano, 28, was charged Monday in 4th District Court with manslaughter, a second-degree felony, and child abuse, a class B misdemeanor.

About 1:10 p.m. on Oct. 28, Miranda left her home in the Brough Trailer Court, 860 W. Columbia Lane, "and placed two grocery store bags full of trash on the hood of her car. The dumpster for the mobile home park where she lived was at the exit of the park and she intended to throw the trash away before continuing to the street," according to charging documents.

The bags were placed on the driver's side of the car in front of the windshield "such that they partially obstructed her view," the charges state.

Two siblings, ages 2 and 4, were outside of their home near the entrance to the mobile home park. Police say the younger girl was on a tricycle and her brother was straddling her bike at the end of their driveway.

As Miranda drove by, "she left her lane of travel and struck" both children. The 2-year-old "and her tricycle were pulled underneath the defendant's car and she was run over. She was rushed by her parents to the hospital where she was declared deceased," charging documents state.

The 4-year-old boy received minor injuries. The name of the deceased girl has not been released. She is only identified in the charges by her initials, C.S. Police originally said the girl was 3.

Correction: A 4-year-old boy was the second person hit. An earlier version incorrectly stated it was a 3-year-old girl.
