High school football player of the week: Mountain Ridge's Kohen Cunningham

HERRIMAN — On a night full of standout performances across Utah high school football, one player rose above the rest.

Mountain Ridge wide receiver Kohen Cunningham turned Friday's rivalry clash into his personal showcase, torching Riverton's defense for 15 receptions for 301 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-19 victory that pushed the Sentinels to 5-2.

For his explosive outing, Cunningham has been named this week's KSL.com Sports high school football player of the week, which is presented with support by Cafe Rio.

Cunningham's effort was part of a record-setting night for Mountain Ridge, where he set a school record for yards, receptions, and touchdowns.

The wide receiver entered the night with four touchdown grabs through the first six games of the season. But by the time the final whistle blew in Riverton, he had doubled that total — a performance that cemented his status as Mountain Ridge's go-to playmaker.

The senior also leads the team in receiving yards, averaging 108.1 per game.

He wasted no time setting the tone, scoring two first quarter touchdowns. Cunningham's first touchdown was on a 23-yard catch from quarterback Jaxon Hunt before he burned the Silverwolves again for a 42-yard score later in the first quarter.

Cunningham grabbed another touchdown in the second quarter before finishing off his night with his fourth and final score of the game, a 33-yard touchdown, in the fourth quarter to seal the victory for Mountain Ridge.

"I felt like I played hard Friday and had some good plays, but honestly it's our whole team's effort that is making us successful," Cunningham said. "We have great receivers; and with our O-line doing big things, it gives Hunt time to step up in the pocket and connect with us. Our team has grown a lot this season, we're pushing each other and it's showing on the field."

With the win, Mountain Ridge remains tied for first place in region play with undefeated Herriman. The Sentinels and Mustangs will face off Friday night in a showdown that could decide the region crown.
