SALT LAKE CITY — A man previously convicted of threatening a judge was charged Tuesday with threatening others while in prison, and doing so by referencing a notorious serial killer.
Fredrick Eugene Greghun, 46, of West Jordan, is charged in 3rd District Court with four counts of making a threat of terrorism, a second-degree felony; four counts of threatening a judge or board member, a third-degree felony; plus two counts of interfering with a public servant and four counts of making a threat of violence, class B misdemeanors.
Greghun was originally sentenced to a term of zero to five years in the Utah State Prison in 2020 for violating a protective order, according to court records. Then in 2021, while incarcerated, he was charged with "threatening to kill a judge, his defense attorney, and other members of court personnel" and convicted again, court documents state.
According to his latest charges, Greghun began sending a series of letters to the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole in May.
"In the first letter … Greghun threatens to kill his mental health doctor and expresses wishes of wanting everyone dead," the charges state. "In the second letter …Greghun threatens to murder his cellmate … if they don't do as he says. He also signs the letter with 'Bind, Torture, Kill!,' a direct reference to the BTK serial killer."
Dennis Rader, also known as the BTK killer, is believed to have murdered at least 10 people in Kansas between 1974 and 1991. He sent letters to police and reporters during that time, describing his crimes and referring to himself as "BTK," for bind, torture, kill.
Greghun then sent two additional letters to the board in which he made threats, the charges state.
When questioned by investigators about his letters, and specifically asked "about Greghun's repeated use of the phrase 'Bind, Torture, Kill' in his letters, Greghun said that he read about BTK serial killer Dennis Rader and that he used the phrase to make his threats seem more credible," according to the charges.
Greghun also stated in his letters that he had caused the death of his cellmate. "He spoke as if the death were a fact, though (the cellmate) was not dead," the charges say.
"(Greghun) sent four letters to the Board of Pardons and Parole threatening to kill the board members, the mental health care providers, his cellmate, and the police force for not doing what he says. (He) gives explicit and violent threats toward them," prosecutors summed up in their charges.
Prior to his new charges being filed, Greghun was due to be released from prison in September of 2026 after serving his entire sentence, according to the board's website.
