ST. GEORGE — The Washington County School District Board of Education has approved a new personal device use policy after a final presentation from Elementary Education Executive Director Steve Gregoire.

The school district collected feedback on the policy draft over the past 30 days, leading to the current draft approved on May 12. The policy change became necessary after the Utah Legislature passed a bill addressing devices in public schools, designated as SB178, earlier this year.

"You'll notice much of the verbiage here is from the bill itself," Gregoire said of the current draft.

He added that students from kindergarten through ninth grade will have a "bell-to-bell" ban on electronic devices in classrooms. Students will need to store their devices in their backpacks or lockers until the end of the day, with possible exceptions, including ones for individual students who need them to monitor medical conditions. Older students will be able to use devices during passing periods and their lunch hour.
