WEST JORDAN — A 19-year-old man who police say fled from officers while handcuffs were still attached to one wrist was arrested Tuesday following a standoff with officers.
Chase Max Thiemig Robertson was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of aggravated escape, theft, aggravated assault, two counts of failing to stop for police, causing property damage, burglary and interfering with an officer.
The investigation began Saturday when a motorcycle was reported stolen near 7000 South and 5600 West. Based on statements made by the motorcycle owner, and after reviewing surveillance video, police located a Chevy Impala nearby that was believed to be connected to the theft, according to a police booking affidavit. The missing motorcycle was parked near the Impala.
Inside the vehicle, an officer found Robertson in the driver's seat, the affidavit states. The officer asked Robertson to get out of the vehicle, but he refused.
"The vehicle did not have a plate, and the vehicle identification number was covered and not able to be seen and had extremely dark tinted windows. (The officer) knocked on the windshield to ask the suspect to exit the vehicle," according to the affidavit. "(The officer) then asked the suspect several times to open the door because she needed to speak to him. The suspect then completely rolled down the front driver's side window. The suspect was not complying with the commands given by (the officer)."
At that point, the officer reached into the vehicle to open the door, grabbed Roberton's arm and got him out of the car and attempted to place him in handcuffs.
"(The officer) placed a handcuff on the suspect's left wrist, the suspect then pulled away his left arm and sat back into the vehicle. Several more commands were given to the suspect to exit the vehicle. The suspect then turned on the vehicle and placed the vehicle into reverse and began moving backwards. The suspect then placed the vehicle into drive and sped away at a high rate of speed. (The officer) was struck by the driver side door," according to the affidavit.
Detectives were able to positively identify Robertson using images from the officer's body camera video. Police then kept watch on his residence near 6750 West and 3800 South. While holding surveillance, officers watched as Robertson got into his car and drove away. Police then followed.
Near 4100 South and 5600 West, "the vehicle began driving at a high rate of speed and driving on the opposing traffic lanes," the affidavit states. Officers unsuccessfully tried to stop the car by spiking its tires as members of the Metro Gang Unit continued to pursue him.
"Chase fled at a high rate of speed and drove into oncoming lanes of traffic during rush hour and ran multiple red lights. Chase also then almost struck ... two pedestrians when fleeing from his residence," the affidavit states.
Robertson eventually circled back around to his home and ran inside.
"After approximately 1½ hours, officers were able to talk Chase out of the home and he was taken into custody," police stated in the affidavit.
During a search of Robertson's residence, several items that were also reported as stolen from the garage where the motorcycle was taken were found, the affidavit states.
Police say Robertson is a documented gang member.
"Chase has multiple houses to hide out and would make it difficult to locate Chase if he was released prior to appearing for court. Chase also has prior arrests for aggravated robbery," according to the affidavit.
