(KSL News) A woman caught stealing mail earlier this month has been charged in a federal indictment.
Someone spotted Elise Ann Peterson driving around in the Holladay-Millcreek area taking mail out of mailboxes and packages off front porches. Charging documents state that when a deputy pulled her over, he found her car stacked with over 300 pieces of mail, boxes and presents.
Peterson faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Meanwhile, U.S. postal inspectors have teamed up with the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office to start contacting the rightful owners. "It's an unfortunate situation. The nice thing about this situation is we caught her. We're hopefully going to get all that mail back to the people that it was stolen from, and hopefully it's in time for Christmas," Salt Lake County sheriff's Capt. Chris Bertram said.
Investigators say this case is a good reminder to take extra precautions with packages and to pick up mail as soon as it's delivered.
