KEY TAKEAWAYS
  • The article previews anticipated movies of 2025, highlighting major releases monthly.
  • Key titles include "Captain America: Brave New World," "Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" and "Wicked: For Good."
  • Variety spans genres, with adaptations, sequels and original films appealing to diverse audiences.

We are well into 2025, but the movies have just started. This new year has a big slate of movies and I am excited for several titles. Others, I can take or leave, but it appears there is something for everyone in 2025.

My plan for this article is to go month-by-month and highlight a couple of big titles and then provide a list of other offerings for that month.

This is not comprehensive — and keep in mind that studios like to be sneaky sometimes and don't announce a release until just a month or two before opening. Or studios may get nervous and push dates or move them up.

Here are the movies to look forward to in 2025:

January

"Wolf Man" — Jan. 10

I was excited about this movie. "Wolf Man" seemed like a perfect opportunity to make a minimalist horror flick and explore the mythos of the Wolf Man beyond a blood-thirsty animal. Sadly, we didn't get that.

"Flight Risk" — Jan. 24

I was cautiously optimistic about the Mel Gibson-directed "Flight Risk." The movie is a contained thriller with almost the entire movie taking place on a small aircraft with just three characters. The movie has its moments, but overall it never really took off.

"Dog Man" — Jan. 31

The big-screen adaptation of the beloved children's books is headed to theaters, and it could be a lot of fun. The books are absurd and it looks like "Dog Man," the movie, is planning on keeping up with that absurdity and I am all for it. So is my 8-year-old. She asks me daily when we're going.

"Back In Action" — Jan. 10

"Presence" — Jan. 24

"Star Trek: Section 31" — Jan. 24

"Brave the Dark" — Jan. 24

"Companion" — Jan. 31

February

"Captain America: Brave New World" — Feb. 14

I mean, I'm not sure what to say. Marvel is not done, and they're ready to kick off 2025 with the Red Hulk and a new Captain in "Captain America: Brave New World." I admit that my endurance is more than waning when it comes to Marvel, but this will be a big movie, and I know many of you are very excited about seeing it.

"The Unbreakable Boy" — Feb. 21

I can be a sucker for a movie that pulls at your heartstrings and "The Unbreakable Boy" is trying to do just that. The movie follows a young boy with a rare bone disease and autism and how he makes the world around him a brighter place despite the challenges he faces.

"Love Hurts" — Feb. 7

"Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy" — Feb. 13

"The Gorge" — Feb. 14

"The Monkey" — Feb. 21

March

"Black Bag" — March 14

I don't know much about "Black Bag" and I hope to keep it that way. The movie is helmed by veteran filmmaker Steven Soderbergh and stars Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett. It's a spy thriller, which I am usually a sucker for.

"Snow White" — March 21

Am I excited about the live-action remake of "Snow White"? No, but many are and it will be one of the most talked about films of the year because it was one of the most talked about in 2024 considering it split potential audiences before it was ever released. You have those excited about it and those who don't like the casting and creative direction. We'll see for ourselves this March.

"Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad, Road Trip" — March 28

I thought the 2014 movie "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day" was a blast. It's a favorite in our home, and we all laugh at it no matter how many times we watch it. The new movie, "Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad, Road Trip" is not a follow-up to that film, but a new take on the familiar characters. Let's see if it works as well as the other film.

"Rule Breakers" — March 7

"The Electric State" — March 14

"Alto Knights" — March 21

"A Working Man" — March 28

April

"A Minecraft Movie" — April 4

Take one Jared Hess, a heaping dose of Jack Black, a dash of one of the most popular video games of all time and you get one of the big first releases of 2025 in "A Minecraft Movie."

I've never really played the game and the idea of a movie version didn't get my interest, but Black can be hilarious and I am a Hess fan, so I'm optimistic that it will be a fun night out at the movies.

"The Accountant 2" — April 25

There are times when a sequel of a movie comes out and you think, "Oh yeah. I kind of forgot that movie existed. I liked the first ... maybe this will be OK."

That's never been more true than with "The Accountant 2." The 2016 movie with Ben Affleck was brilliant, but it was entertaining and it certainly set up a universe where we could see sequels, but after several years I think we all forgot about it. But now we're getting chapter two and Affleck is back.

"Freaky Tales" — April 4

"G20" — April 10

"The Amateur" — April 11

"The King of Kings" — April 11

"Sinners" — April 18

May

"Thunderbolts" — May 2

Remember when I said Marvel wasn't done yet? "Thunderbolts" isn't a sequel, but it's utilizing characters and borderline villains we've seen in earlier MCU installments. Imagine the Marvel "Suicide Squad." I like to be a naysayer about Marvel these days, but I admit that this one could be fun. Or it'll be a total train wreck. I feel like there is no middle ground on this one.

"Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" — May 23

While "Mission: Impossible 2" was a huge swing and a miss for me, I have to say that I love this franchise. Easily one of my favorites and personally I am looking forward to "Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning" more than any other film in 2025. I hope it lives up to the crescendo it has been building and finishes this incredible franchise with a bang.

"Lilo & Stitch" — May 23

Disney is plowing forward with a relentless fervor on their live-action remake crusade. Is it a crusade or a cash grab? Either way, after "Snow White" we get "Lilo & Stitch." The original is a great flick; I can't say the same for the remake. We'll have to wait until May to find out.

"A Big Bold Beautiful Journey" — May 9

"Final Destination: Bloodlines" — May 16

"Hurry Up Tomorrow" — May 16

"Karate Kid: Legends" — May 30

"The Life of Chuck" — May 30

June

"Elio" — June 13

Pixar has a pretty impressive track record. I think they have slipped up once or twice, but for the most part, they are knocking it out of the park. Hopefully, we get more of that homerun magic with "Elio" this June.

"How to Train Your Dragon" — June 13

Dreamworks has an animation studio that is the closest thing Disney has to a rival. They have juggernaut franchises like "Shrek" and "How to Train Your Dragon." In a move to continue to try and keep up with the Disneys, the studio is now jumping into the live-action remake game. They're kicking things off with the aforementioned "How to Train Your Dragon." I don't really know what to think. I love the animated film series and I'm not sure we need a live-action version, but here we go.

"From the World of John Wick: Ballerina" — June 6

"28 Years Later" — June 20

"F1" — June 27

"M3GAN 2.0" — June 27

July

"Jurassic World: Rebirth" — July 2

When will people learn that cloning dinosaurs and opening a theme park is not a good idea? Never as long as it keeps making money. Another Jurassic movie is on the way, this time it's called "Jurassic World: Rebirth." No Chris Pratt or Bryce Dallas Howard this time around. This movie now has Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey. What's it about? Probably dinosaurs and how they try to eat humans.

"Superman" — July 11

The DC universe has struggled to keep up with Marvel, which means maybe it's time to move on, right? Not even close. It means we pretend like all those earlier movies never happened and hire the guy who made some of the most popular Marvel flicks to launch a new DC universe. James Gunn is now at the helm and the first movie is a new "Superman" flick and it flies into theaters this July.

"The Smurfs Movie" — July 18

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" — July 18

"The Fantastic Four: First Steps" — July 25

August

"The Bad Guys 2" — Aug. 1

I don't always love sequels, but some worlds you just want to revisit and one of those for me is the world of "The Bad Guys." I loved the 2022 movie, and I am excited to get the same talented voice cast back for "The Bad Guys 2." When it comes to 2025 animated movies this is at the top of my list.

"Freakier Friday" — Aug. 8

For those of you, like my wife, who have been dying to see Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reunite for another "Freaky Friday," then I have some great news. They are reuniting for "Freakier Friday." So, you've got that to look forward to I guess.

"The Naked Gun" — Aug. 1

"The Battle of Baktan Cross" — Aug. 8

"Nobody 2" — Aug. 15

September

"Downton Abbey 3" — Sept. 12

I admit I was a "Downton Abbey" fan for the first few seasons. Then they started killing off characters like it was a slasher movie and I lost interest. Then I saw the last film to review it and I was shocked how quickly I was pulled back into that world and all for it. I hope the same thing happens when the new movie releases this September.

"The Bride" — Sept. 26

The story of Frankenstein is no stranger to the big screen and it's back for another round. This time around some crazy doctors are hoping to create a companion for the famed monster. Some of the intriguing points of this movie include Maggie Gyllenhaal directing, and star her brother Jake, and former "Dark Knight" co-star Christian Bale.

"The Conjuring: Last Rites" — Sept. 5

"Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie" — Sept. 26

October

"Tron: Ares" — Oct. 10

We haven't seen a "Tron" movie since 2010, but that's about to change. The new movie "Tron: Ares" will star Even Peters and Jared Leto with Jeff Bridges returning once again. I wasn't blown away with "Tron: Legacy," but maybe this new one can turn it around.

"The Black Phone 2" — Oct. 17

October is all about scary movies and this year we're getting a sequel to one of my recent faves. 2021's "The Black Phone" was a taut and well-executed horror flick and I hope they capture that same intensity in the sequel. Ethan Hawke and Mason Thames are back with the same director, so I'm optimistic.

"Roofman" — Oct. 3

"Animal Friends" — Oct. 10

"Good Fortune" — Oct. 17

"Mortal Kombat 2" — Oct. 24

November

"The Running Man" — Nov. 7

As a kid who was way too young to see it, I loved the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie "The Running Man." It wasn't good, but I was a kid and I thought it was awesome. I'm now an adult, Arnold is replaced with Glen Powell, and the Stephen King short story is headed back to theaters. The thing I'm most interested in is the fact it is directed and co-written by Edgar Wright, which means we should get a very unique and stylistic approach to the familiar story.

"Wicked: For Good" — Nov. 21

What do I need to say here? This is likely the most anticipated movie of 2025 and I get why. I thought "Wicked" was fantastic and I'm looking forward to the finale.

"Zootopia 2" — Nov. 26

2016's "Zootopia" is a favorite in the Clyde home and we're looking forward to the sequel. With Jason Bateman and Ginnifer Goodwin returning we're hoping for another fun dive into the noir-esque world of "Zootopia."

"Predator: Badlands" — Nov. 7

"Now You See Me 3" — Nov. 14

"David" — Nov. 21

December

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" — Dec. 19

I don't like the "Avatar" movies, but billions of dollars in ticket sales tell me I'm wrong. I am not looking forward to this new movie, but odds are most of you are and I'm happy for you. Have fun, friends.

"Sarah's Oil" — Dec. 25

I don't know much about "Sarah's Oil," but the synopsis on IMdB makes it sound like it could be a sweeping epic that either strikes oil or misses the mark. The synopsis says, "In 1914 little Sarah Rector was granted a plot of dusty Oklahoma land, where she not only discovered an ocean of oil, but a rich vein of greed, corruption, violence, and betrayal that threatened her life and all she loved. Poor, and only 11 years old, Sarah was pitted against the mightiest forces of the time, yet she prevailed with courage, family, friendship and faith to become the wealthiest Black girl in the world."

I'm hoping for the best, but we'll have to wait and see if it's executed well or not.

"Five Nights at Freddy's 2" — Dec. 5

"The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants" — Dec. 19

"Anaconda" — Dec. 25

"Marty Supreme" — Dec. 25
