The man responsible for diverting a JetBlue flight bound for California to Salt Lake City Monday night made his first appearance in court today.

Dressed in orange and shackled to a chain, Sharom Yarimo thanked the judge for pronouncing his name properly.

Investigators say Yarimo was drunk and interfering with the flight crew, but he says it's all just a misunderstanding.

Yarimo's appearance today was brief. The judge set a date in late December for his arraignment, and the prosecutor announced he will go before the grand jury next week.

He is currently being kept in jail, due to an immigration hold. Investigators say the Israeli native is in the country illegally. Yarimo says he has an application pending for U.S. citizenship.
