SOUTH SALT LAKE — Two officers are injured, one from being hit by a vehicle, in South Salt Lake Friday evening after an encounter with a federal fugitive, police said.
The incident occurred about 5:40 p.m. at 249 E. Helm Avenue. Unified police officers on the scene said two officers were injured, one of whom got hit by a vehicle.
Police said the Metro Gang Unit was in the area trying to arrest Tyson Yellowbear, 39, on a federal warrant when he hit one of the officers, who was outside his patrol vehicle, with a pickup truck. It's unclear if Yellowbear purposefully targeted that officer.
A different Unified police vehicle then stopped the truck from fleeing the scene, officer Quin Wilkins said. Both officers and Yellowbear sustained injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening and were transported to the hospital, police said.
It's unclear how the second officer was injured. Police also did not specify what the federal warrant was for.
Yellowbear has a criminal history that includes burglary and a conviction of criminal homicide, according to a case search.
