OREM — An Orem woman has been arrested and accused of having an unlawful sexual relationship with her sons' 17-year-old martial arts instructor.
Amanda Nicole Fowlke, 30, was booked into the Utah County Jail Wednesday for investigation of three counts of unlawful sexual conduct with a 16- or 17-year-old and obstruction of justice.
Starting in October, a teenager who teaches martial arts agreed to give private lessons to Fowlke's boys at their home. The teen became friends with the family and would attend dinners at the home and go trick-or-treating with the children, according to a police booking affidavit.
The teen's mother became suspicious, however, when she saw her son taking Fowlke on a motorcycle ride in January. The teen's phone records were checked by his parents and "they found that the victim and Amanda had tons of phone calls and over 1,400 text messages back and forth just in a one-week period," the affidavit states.
The teen deleted his text messages before his parents could read them, but "there were still logs ... showing the vast amount of messages and late night phone calls with Amanda," according to the arrest report.
The mother confronted Fowlke and demanded that she cease all contact with her son. But police say the two continued to communicate using an app.
In April, the boy's diary was found in which he documented sexual activity with Fowlke dating back to when he was 16, the affidavit alleges. Police also conducted a search of the teen's phone and reported finding explicit videos he had recorded of Fowlke.
When detectives searched the teen's social media accounts, they found messages he had exchanged with Fowlke explaining that his mother had found out what was happening. Fowlke replies, in part, "Don't expect me to be around. I'll be going to jail," according to the affidavit. A search warrant affidavit filed during the investigation adds that some of the messages "contain some confessions from Amanda about knowing what she did was wrong since (the teen) is young."
On Wednesday, police arranged with Fowlke and her attorney for her to be taken into custody.
