5A track and field: More records fall on first day of UHSAA state meet

PROVO — Plenty of state records fell on the first day of the state track and field meet Thursday at BYU's Clarence Robison Track.

Maple Mountain's 4x200-meter relay team didn't want to be left out.

The Golden Eagles' squad of Tyson Pugmire, Logan Sircable, Easton Merrill and Banks Jackson broke their own 5A record with a championship-winning time of 1 minute, 26.72 Thursday evening.

"We've been training for months — all of us — for this," Pugmire said.

The records began falling early, and by a huge margin. In one of the first events of the morning, Timpview junior Jane Hedengren finished the 5A girls' 3200-meter run in 9:52.96, shattering the UHSAA record of 10:13.86 set by Ogden's Sarah Feeny in 2014.

The reigning Gatorade Utah girls track and field athlete of the year topped her previous 5A record of 10:22.93 by nearly 30 seconds on a 76-degree day with mild wind gusts that never exceeded 10 miles per hour.

Hedengren's mark ranks No. 2 in the nation in the girls' 3200, according to athletic.net, trailing only Texas' Elizabeth Leachman who ran 9:43.75 back on Feb. 15.

Viewmont's boys added a state record in the 4x800-meter relay, with the team of Ben Hyde, Weston Egnew, Peter Gehring and Gabe Hooper finishing in 7:43.31.

"The warm weather really helped us," Jackson admitted after Maple Mountain's win. "We usually do well in the warmth."
