SALT LAKE CITY — Motorists will have to deal with more than just construction in Salt Lake County this weekend.

This year's Salt Lake City Marathon and other related events are scheduled to begin at the University of Utah beginning at 6 a.m. on Saturday. But it will create several temporary road closures across the county's northeast corner on Saturday, including a closure by Washington Square Park that will last throughout the morning and afternoon.

Road closures will begin with 200 East from 400 South to 500 South starting at midnight Saturday, but that will be extended to 600 South by 3 a.m. That's by the finish line for the marathon, half-marathon, bike tour and other shorter-distance events.

Other periodic closures are planned throughout Salt Lake City and other parts of the county through the morning and afternoon as the marathon, half-marathon, bike tour and short-distance events take place. Most of the closures are expected to end by 2 p.m, while the area by the finish line will reopen by 5 p.m.

Salt Lake police said the closures will be in place to help event organizers "lessen impacts on our community." They allow for more space for racers and spectators to enjoy the events.

"Officers will be stationed throughout the course to help ensure the safety of everyone involved," police said in a statement. "All roadway users are encouraged to follow all posted signs and directions from officers along the racecourse."
