WEST VALLEY CITY — One person is in custody and police are looking for at least two others following a rollover crash on the I-15 collector that happened as a delivery driver followed a group that allegedly tried to steal his vehicle.

About 1:30 p.m. Thursday, a vehicle heading east on state Route 201 rolled while taking the ramp onto northbound I-15, according to the Utah Highway Patrol. The vehicle rolled onto its hood and caught fire, said UHP Sgt. Cameron Roden.

No serious injuries were reported. One of the passengers of the rolled vehicle stayed at the scene and was taken into custody. But the driver and another passenger were picked up by another vehicle and fled, according to police.

West Valley police say the incident began as a robbery attempt in their city. A grocery delivery driver was dropping off groceries at an apartment complex near 4000 S. Redwood Road.

"While the driver was making a delivery, a suspect attempted to steal the driver's vehicle. The delivery driver saw this occurring and the suspect fled in a different vehicle occupied by two others," said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

Police said during the robbery attempt one of the men also pointed a weapon at the driver.

The delivery driver then followed the men onto the freeway.

Police advise everyone in similar situations to not follow the people, but instead take note of the license plate and let the police look for them.
