SALT LAKE CITY — A Utah man was killed in an avalanche in Montana on Tuesday.

Ravalli County Sheriff Steve Holton said that David Macfarlane, 64, of Park City, was killed in an avalanche at Lost Trail Ski Area, located about 90 miles south of Missoula.

Holton said five people from Utah were skiing in the northwest area of the ski resort Tuesday afternoon where the avalanche occurred. The avalanche swept Macfarlane away, but other members of his party were able to locate him and begin first aid.

Ravalli County search and rescue teams responded to the incident, but Macfarlane died from his injuries before a helicopter could reach him.
