RIVERTON — For the second time this year, Riverton is looking for a new police chief.

Blair Barfuss, who was sworn in as Riverton's police chief in February, is no longer with the department, a city spokesman confirmed. The city is not releasing any other details about Barfuss' departure.

Prior to being named Riverton's chief, Barfuss served as the police chief at Utah State University for a short time. He also served as the director of public safety at Utah Tech University and spent the majority of his law enforcement career with the West Valley City Police Department.

Barfuss replaced Don Hutson, who was Riverton's first police chief when the city left the Unified Police Department and started its own police force in 2019.

Barfuss' departure comes just a couple of months after Deputy Chief Jenn Diederich also parted ways with the city. It was just in August that Barfuss posted a message on the city's website introducing his new command staff. A reason for Diederich's departure has not been given.

The police department's website currently lists the position of chief as "vacant." Deputy Chief Shane Taylor will serve as interim chief until a replacement for Barfuss is named.
