ALLEN PARK, Mich. — The Detroit Lions and New York Jets are hoping to be part of an NFL trend by earning a spot in the playoffs a year after missing out. For 33 consecutive seasons, the league has had at least four franchises in the postseason a year after they failed to earn a bid and there were seven in the 2022 playoffs. Jacksonville led the latest group of breakout teams, winning the AFC South after matching Detroit's NFL-low three wins in 2021. The Lions open the NFL season Thursday night on the road against the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
