The purple band on the left shoulder of the Lakers' uniforms has No. 44 in gold at the center. West played his entire 14-year NBA career for the Lakers, becoming one of the greatest scorers and most versatile guards of his era while earning 14 All-Star selections and earning the nickname "Mr. Clutch." West went on to be a coach and an executive with the Lakers, most notably building the 1980s "Showtime" roster.

The NBA has expanded the permissible scope of coach's challenge reviews on some out-of-bounds plays, saying Tuesday that if a foul should have been called on the play it now can be assessed shortly after the fact. The league's Board of Governors approved the move at its meeting in New York, after it was unanimously recommended by the league's competition committee last week. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver was scheduled to speak about the meeting later Tuesday. The change will take effect this season.

The 24-game season will be played at Municipal Auditorium, with 29 of the 40 players having WNBA experience. Lexie Brown chairs the AU Pro Basketball player executive committee and also plays for the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks. She says she's heard from many players looking forward to competing in Nashville. They will have competition from Unrivaled, a 3-on-3 league developed by Breanna Stewart and  Napheesa Collier, set to debut in January.

The Dallas Mavericks have reached a multiyear local broadcast rights agreement. The team said Friday that the agreement with TEGNA will triple the number of people that will be able to see most of the NBA Western Conference champion's televised games over the air for free. About 10 million people in more than 3.1 million Texas households will have access to broadcasts of games not exclusively televised nationally. At least 70 games will be on local broadcasts. The announcement comes after the Mavericks and financially troubled Diamond Sports Group last month mutually agreed to end their existing rights agreement for games on Bally Sports Southwest.

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that the Cleveland Cavaliers and free agent center Tristan Thompson have agreed to a one-year contract. The 33-year-old Thompson returned to the Cavs last season after playing for Boston, Sacramento, Indiana, Chicago and the Los Angeles Lakers since 2020. Thompson played in 49 games last season, averaging 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds. The person says Thompson's agent, Rich Paul, finalized the deal with the team on Friday. This season will be Thompson's 11th with Cleveland, which selected him with the No. 4 pick in the 2011 draft.
