HUNTSVILLE, Weber County — A truck driver died Friday after his dump truck's brakes failed, causing him to crash into Pineview Reservoir.
Utah Highway Patrol Cpl. Tara Wahlberg said a commercial dump truck loaded with top soil was driving north on Trapper's Loop approaching state Route 39. The area has a significant downhill slope and UHP said the truck seems to have lost its brakes going downhill just before 4 p.m.
Witnesses told troopers they saw the truck braking and smoke emerged from the wheel hubs of the vehicle. Another witness said the truck tried to slow down by driving on the soft shoulder of the road.
The truck was unable to stop at the stop sign on S.R. 39, and after crossing through the intersection, the truck went through a field then traveled down a steep embankment into Pineview Reservoir.
The truck was partially submerged in water, trapping the driver. Emergency responders found the man in the cab after the truck was pulled from the water. UHP confirmed later Friday the driver is deceased.
The man's name has not yet been released, but troopers said he is from Mexico, where most of his family lives.
