SANDY — A Wyoming man is facing criminal charges after police say he fired several shots in the air while driving along State Street before stopping at a pancake restaurant.

Zane Ashby Rhodes, 24, of Evanston, was charged Thursday in 3rd District Court with possession of a gun by a restricted person, a third-degree felony; drug possession, a class A misdemeanor; and unlawful discharge of a gun, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, class B misdemeanors.

On April 22, Sandy police were called to investigate a report of an SUV driving on State Street "and five to six gunshots coming from the car," a police booking affidavit states. One witness told police he heard five shots followed by a pause and two more shots.

After the shots were fired, the vehicle pulled into an IHOP restaurant, 10815 S. State. When an officer arrived, he spotted the vehicle and saw a handgun on the seat in plain view, the charges state. When the officer talked to a restaurant employee, she said two men "were being shady" and had gone into the bathroom.

Rhodes and another man were detained when they exited the restroom. When the officer questioned Rhodes, he "stated he didn't know why he had done it, but that he had shot the gun out of the window from the passenger seat," the charges state.

A police K-9 was called to the scene and "indicated to the presence of illegal narcotics," the court documents allege. Police reported finding marijuana in the vehicle and a bag with cocaine in Rhodes' hat.

No injuries were reported.
