SALT LAKE CITY — Two men have been arrested by Salt Lake police in connection to a parking lot shooting that injured a 16-year-old boy earlier this month.
Axel Jose Pineda Mondragon, 22, was arrested Sunday for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury and three counts of felony discharge of a firearm. Officers and detectives booked him into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail.
Mondragon was in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest, according to police.
Armando Ramirez, 31, was arrested Friday for investigation of aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, discharge of a firearm, two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person, felony discharge of a firearm and failing to stop at the command of a police officer.
At 10:39 p.m. on June 9, police received several 911 dispatch calls about a shooting in a parking lot near 3292 S. Richmond Street. When police arrived, several vehicles with bullet holes and multiple shell casings were located at the scene. Later a 16-year-old boy was dropped off at a hospital with a bullet wound to the ankle, which was not considered to be life-threatening.
Police say the shooting is gang-related and involved more than 10 people, six guns, with approximately 50 rounds being fired. Investigators believe that the teenager is one of the shooters, according to a news release.
"This shooting could have had far more devastating consequences," said Salt Lake Police Chief Mike Brown. "I want to acknowledge the work of our detectives who are committed to following every lead and utilizing all available evidence and resources to track down and hold the suspects involved in this shooting accountable. We will continue to do everything we can to combat gang and gun violence in our city, and we will not tolerate it."
