GARDEN CITY, Rich County — A driver and passenger were injured Friday evening when a semitruck ran off the road and crashed through a few garages in Rich County.
The crash happened at 18 N. Lakeside Drive near the condo complex Lake Meadow Lodge in Garden City. The Utah Highway Patrol said the semitruck experienced apparent brake failure on the way into Garden City.
In a witness video, the truck slams through a line of garage units, fully destroying at least two garages, then barrels into a yard, partially crashing into a home.
Troopers say the driver and passenger of the semitruck were both injured. One was taken to a hospital by ambulance, and one was airlifted to the University of Utah Hospital.
No one else was injured in the crash, "which is a miracle," Garden City Mayor Mike Leonhardt said.
Leonhardt said the truck failed to use the runaway truck ramp and blew through a traffic light on its way into the city.
"This has gone on way too long with these trucks barreling into town," Leonhardt said, referencing similar incidents. "My focus is working with UDOT, Utah Highway Patrol in figuring out how we protect our residents and our citizens and those who recreate here."
Leonhardt said the Utah Department of Transportation is constructing a mandatory brake check area a mile above the runaway ramp. He said he is working to find more solutions to protect the community.
According to UDOT, Logan Road and Bear Lake Boulevard were closed for a time to deal with the crash.
Additional details were not immediately available.
