WEST VALLEY CITY — A man was taken into custody Friday afternoon after firing shots from his vehicle in West Valley City, police said.
The man's family called police about 1:20 p.m. to report he had a gun, was suicidal and had fled the home. The family went looking for him and found him pulled off the road near 4900 South and Bacchus Highway.
At 2 p.m., family members and passersby told police the man was standing outside his vehicle, pointing the gun at himself and waving it around, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.
Officers arrived at the scene, blocked traffic in the area and kept watch from a distance. Family members of the man approached him, but he fired his gun from inside his vehicle, then drove away at high speeds, Vainuku said.
Police said the man headed south on Bacchus Highway and ran into spikes that police set up near 7900 South.
The spikes disabled two tires, and the man pulled off the road. He then threw his weapon from the vehicle and was taken safely into custody, police said.
The man was identified by police as Jimmie Hamlin, 57. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of felony discharge of a firearm, reckless driving and disorderly conduct.
