WEST VALLEY CITY — A woman accused of running over and killing a man lying in the road in West Valley City last year is now facing criminal charges accusing her of driving while under the influence.

Amber Larae Marquez, 45, of West Valley City, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death, a second-degree felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.

About 1:45 a.m. on March 1, 2022, police were called to the area of 4500 South and 4000 West where a man had been run over and he was still underneath the vehicle.

Ammerrick Sifor White, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police questioned the driver, Marquez, who said "she saw something in the road in front of her but it was too late to stop," according to charging documents.

Prior to the crash, another woman said she was also driving on 4000 West when she saw White "laying in the fetal position in the middle of the roadway with his hands under his head like he was sleeping," the charges state.

The woman stopped and got out of her car to talk to White and ask if he was OK, but then had to move out of the way as she saw Marquez approaching.

"(She) stated she witnessed the Toyota run over White and drag him to where the driver stopped," according to the charges.

White suffered multiple skull fractures and blunt force injuries to his head, police said.

Marquez told police she was driving home from the store at the time. "A field sobriety test was completed to which Marquez showed several signs of impairment," the charges allege.

A toxicology report showed Marquez had methamphetamine, amphetamine and oxycodone in her system at the time of the crash, according to court documents. Police also reported finding "a straw with a white powdery residue in her purse."
