WEST VALLEY CITY — A man who police say was lying in the middle of the road was hit and killed overnight in West Valley City. Police say the case is being investigated as a drunken driving incident.

About 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, a person was lying in the road on 4000 West at 4480 South for an unknown reason. A driver heading south saw the dark object and was in the process of turning around to check it out, when a northbound driver who did not see the man ran over the victim and dragged him 200 feet, said West Valley police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

"The man was pinned under the vehicle and was obviously deceased," according to police.

The name of the 39-year-old victim was not immediately released pending notification of family members.

Although police described the driver of the vehicle that hit the victim as cooperative, the driver was also suspected of driving under the influence and was arrested.
