SALT LAKE CITY — A young girl died due to an auto-pedestrian crash at 2100 East and 1300 South in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, according to police.

Police believe the girl was hit by a Nissan pickup truck in a crosswalk around 3:30 p.m. The driver was turning from 1300 South onto 2100 East, Salt Lake police said in a statement.

Thursday, police confirmed it was an 11-year-old girl who died. A GoFundMe account* seeking donations to help pay for funeral costs identifies her as Winifred "Winnie" Wolfgramm, a sixth grade student at Bonneville Elementary School.

A witness said Winnie appeared to be walking home from school with a friend when she was hit. The friend was already across the street, but the girl was still in the crosswalk when the truck turned right, the woman said.

"I was right behind the truck that hit her," she said. "I saw the girl get hit, so I pulled my car into the Chevron and I ran out and was actually the first person to get up next to her. Her friend was there. ... She was breathing for a second until she kind of took a deep exhale and I think that's when she passed."

The woman, who provided only her first name, Brooklen, said she was on the phone with a 911 operator and was instructed to flip the girl over. She and another bystander began chest compressions until paramedics arrived about six minutes later.

Winnie was taken to a hospital, where she died soon after, police said.

The driver of the truck, a 47-year-old man, remained at the scene after the crash and was cooperating with investigators.

Community members later gathered and hung ribbons at Bonneville Elementary School.

The crash marks the 24th traffic fatality in Salt Lake City this year, according to police.

Police closed 2100 East in both directions throughout the accident investigation.
