MIDVALE — Unified police are continuing to piece together details about a wild shootout in Midvale on Sunday that they say involved two vehicles whose occupants shot at each other and rammed into each each other as they drove for about a mile.
One stray shot went into the window of a nearby residence, according to police, No one was injured. Investigators say shell casings and vehicle parts could be found on the road from about 700 E. Downing Street to 900 E. Winchester Street.
The confrontation began about 6 p.m. Sunday when two men arranged to buy drugs from a man and a woman and originally agreed to meet at a gas station near 7200 South and 700 East, said Unified Police Sgt. Melody Cutler.
When both sides showed up, they moved to a less public location near 700 East and Downing Street. Once there, the man and woman got into the back seat of the alleged buyer's Buick. But once they were in the vehicle, one of the buyers pulled out a gun and attempted to rob the drug dealers, Cutler said.
After emptying their pockets, the man and woman got out of the car. Just as they did so, friends of the couple pulled up in an SUV, according to police. At that point, shots were fired and occupants of the SUV and the Buick continued to exchange gunfire as they drove north on 700 East, Cutler said, adding that the vehicles also rammed into each other.
At some point during the confrontation, a 38-year-old woman was shot, Cutler said. The circumstances surrounding her injury were still being investigated Monday. Cutler said the woman was treated at a local hospital for an injury and was later released. She was also questioned by investigators.
The Buick was later found abandoned near a motel. Tucker Bohn, 26, and another man — the two suspected of trying to buy drugs and then robbing the sellers — were questioned.
Cutler said the challenge for detectives is sorting through the conflicting stories from each side and matching evidence with facts. Because of that, only Bohn had been taken into custody as of Monday for allegedly violating the conditions of his parole. No arrests had been made in connection with the shootout.
The search for the SUV and its occupants continued Monday.
