STREAMTOWN — It is now October, and while you're setting up spooky decorations, I'm sitting in my basement with all my streaming services, ready to watch something.
Every month, your favorite and not-so-favorite streaming services release new titles to their library. While some of you love scrolling through endless titles, others aren't so keen on that practice. For those who want to skip the scrolling, I'm here to help out.
I have pulled out some of the best new titles hitting streaming services this October for you to enjoy. I should give a warning; however, there aren't as many Halloween movies as one would hope.
Netflix
17 Again — Available now
I guess you could call this one a guilty pleasure, but I have a soft spot for 2009's "17 Again." I've seen this movie several times and it still makes me laugh. I have to assume I'm not alone in this. So, for those of you who have a soft spot for this early Zac Efron title, I have good news: it's available now on Netflix.
City Slickers — Available now
This movie may be over 30 years old, but "City Slickers" is still a great flick. Sure, some of the comedy hasn't aged as well as one would hope, but there are still plenty of laughs to be had, thanks to Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern. It's been a while since I've seen this one, but I'm looking forward to giving it another look.
Missing Link — Available Oct. 9
Looking for a family movie night flick? The 2019 animated "Missing Link" is coming to Netflix. This movie seemed to fall through the cracks when it was first released, which is unfortunate. The film has plenty of laughs and is great for a night in with the kids.
The School for Good and Evil — Available Oct. 19
I have this title on the list out of curiosity, considering I have yet to see it. The Netflix original "The School for Good and Evil" follows two best friends on opposite sides of an enchanted school that trains heroes and villains to protect the balance of good and evil.
Hulu
About Time — Available now
I am not against romantic comedies, but too often, it's the same trope over and over again with nothing new to offer. I would list "About Time" as my favorite rom-com. The movie is filled with charm, humor, originality and heart. It's almost better to let you go in blind to this one because it will surprise and delight you.
"About Time" is rated R for some language. The sexual content is less than almost all the other PG-13 rom-coms you've seen. There are about five unnecessary F-words, nearly all of which show up in the first 30 minutes. If that's too much for you, and it could be, you may want to avoid the movie.
The Fugitive — Available now
I don't need to say too much about this one. "The Fugitive" is an absolute classic and gave us so many iconic movie lines. I also had to put this on here because it's one of my mom's all-time favorite movies. And you know what? It's a good pick.
Monster House — Available now
Here is another one for a family movie night during the spooky season. "Monster House" isn't the best of the scary kids' movies, but it is fun and will give you a chuckle and a slight fright. The mention of this movie terrified my son to tears when he was a toddler, but he's outgrown that, and it's one we enjoy watching this time of year.
The Way Way Back — Available Oct. 31
Those who know me well they're aware that I have a few film genres that I love. One of those is an excellent coming-of-age story. One of my favorites is "The Way Way Back." The movie has a perfect blend of humor and drama. It features an out-of-character performance from Steve Carrell and a brilliant one from Sam Rockwell. In fact, I think it's Rockwell's most underrated performance.
Amazon Prime
Source Code — Available now
There is one movie I have been telling people about for over a decade. "Source Code" is a mind-bending thriller that not nearly enough people have seen. The movie is intelligent, exciting and enthralling. I don't want to give much away, but if you want a great action-thriller that will mess with your brain a little bit, you need to watch "Source Code" on Amazon Prime.
Teen Wolf — Available now
Is "Teen Wolf" a good movie? No, but it's "Teen Wolf." It's one of those movies my brother and I stopped on every time we came across it while flipping through the channels. Be warned; however, it may be a bit racier than you remember if you watch it again.
The Hundred-Foot Journey — Available now
This list is shaping up to be one where I am hopefully introducing you all to some new titles that will be well worth your time. "The Hundred-Foot Journey" is now available on Amazon Prime, and I can't recommend this movie enough. The film is a feel-good delight and one I wish I had watched much sooner. There is something special about watching a movie that sincerely makes you happy, and this is that kind of movie. It will also make you hungry.
HBO Max
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid — Available now
If you have ever seen "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," you know why I added it to the list. If you haven't seen it, find out why we're all excited it's streaming on HBO Max. The film boasts excellent performances, laughs and action — it's a classic for a reason.
