The incident happened at 1770 W. 4100 South when officials say the firefighters were in the process of rescuing a 34-year-old woman who had fallen at the site. An interior staircase collapsed during the rescue, injuring all four involved. It is unclear which of the woman's injuries were sustained in the initial fall and which came from the stair collapse, officials said.
The firefighter who was taken by medical helicopter "suffered significant injuries and has a ways to go, but is steadily improving," officials tweeted Monday night. "Two other firefighters suffered less serious injuries and have been treated and released. Another firefighter who experienced the later onset of pain related to the collapse is undergoing further evaluation."
