OGDEN — A small apartment building may be a complete loss after a fire early Tuesday displaced six residents, fire officials said.

About 5:46 a.m., firefighters responded to the report of smoke in an apartment building at 2233 Jefferson Ave.

Smoke was coming from the basement of the two-story building, the Ogden Fire Department said in a statement. Crews quickly searched and evacuated the apartments and began fighting the fire.

The fire reached the attic space and "exhausted" through the roof before crews extinguished it, firefighters said.

The cause and origin of the fire is under investigation. Officials said the home "may be a total loss," but did not disclose a potential cost of damage.

The Red Cross is helping those displaced by the fire.
