SALT LAKE CITY — Police arrested a man Tuesday in connection with a fatal May 29 shooting in Salt Lake City.

Jared Lance, 41, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder, possession or use of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person and obstructing justice.

Lance is accused of killing 40-year-old Robert Barros, who was found with at least one gunshot wound in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 1790 S. West Temple. Police rendered aid to Barros, but he later died.

Investigators say Barros was driving a silver car and parked in the lot shortly before his death. Another car, which police believe Lance was driving, pulled into the lot behind Barros, blocking the car from being able to leave.

Lance got out of the car and began shooting Barros, then took Barros' car and drove away, according to a statement from Salt Lake police. A passenger in Lance's first car climbed into the driver's seat and fled the scene. Surveillance footage of the shooting corroborates eyewitness accounts of the shooting, according to a police booking affidavit.

Police said they later found both cars, and Lance's cellphone and ID were located in the car he initially drove to the scene. That car was located near the scene of the shooting, police say, while Barros' car was found abandoned in Kearns.

Additional surveillance footage shows Lance arriving at a Kearns home wearing different clothing and holding a box, then shows Lance put the box in a fire pit and start a fire, according to the affidavit.

Police say Lance was on probation at the time of his arrest. Federal court documents show Lance pleaded guilty in August to escaping while in custody, and he was sentenced to time served and three years of supervised release. His Tuesday arrest would violate the terms of his federal supervised release.
