HELPER — A female motorcyclist died after hitting a guardrail while riding north on state Route 191 northeast of Helper on Thursday afternoon.

The crash happened at about 5 p.m. when the woman, who was a lead rider of two other motorcyclists, failed to navigate a turn, the Utah Highway Patrol said in a news release.

UHP described the area as being a canyon with several "S-turns," and noted that the rider had only a motorcycle learner's permit and "did not have a lot of experience driving a motorcycle." Officials said that the rider failed to navigate a turn, hit the guardrail and was thrown off the bike and over the rail. She died from her injuries.

Officials have not released the woman's name and are still in the process of notifying her family.
