MOAB — A BASE jumper was killed in Grand County on Thursday, according to a statement from the Grand County Sheriff's Office.
According to a prepared statement, Jesus Miguel Diaz, 27, of New Mexico, was found unresponsive in an area about three miles east of Moab. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter was used to retrieve Diaz's body. The Grand County Sheriff's Office called the incident a "BASE jumping accident," but no other details about what happened were immediately provided. BASE stands for building, antenna, span (such as a bridge) and earth (such as a cliff).
In an unrelated incident, a 55-year-old Moab man was also killed in a BASE jumping accident in January. The man was wearing a wingsuit when he crashed after jumping off a cliff overlooking Professor Valley near Rocky Rapid.
