SALT LAKE CITY — A man who told police he was "dope sick" when he hit two children in a crosswalk, now faces criminal charges.
Tyler Weyrauch, 30, of Salt Lake City, was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court with two counts of driving under the influence, a third-degree felony; and two driving infractions.
On Sept. 20, Weyrauch was driving a Jeep Cherokee when he hit two children walking at 1033 W. 400 South, according to charging documents. He was going 6 mph over the speed limit, the charges state. A 5-year-old boy was was sitting on top of the shoulders of a 14-year-old girl when they were hit, the charges state.
The girl was "thrown more than 95 feet, struck her head and lost consciousness," according to the charges. The boy went through the Jeep's windshield and landed in the front passenger seat. Both children were taken to Primary Children's Hospital. When interviewed later by police, neither could remember anything about the crash, the charges state.
When police attempted to question Weyrauch at the scene, he "kept nodding off," according to the charges. When detectives talked to him later, he stated that he had used heroin the night before and "that he was feeling 'dope sick' (that) morning," the charges state.
