SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Department of Health reported 100 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday and 24 deaths.

The new cases were confirmed out of 2,493 people tested since the previous day's report. School-age children accounted for 21 of the cases.

Across the state, 238 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, a decrease of 23 since Monday.

Now, 66.1% of residents ages 5 and older have been vaccinated with at least two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or one dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Meanwhile, 27% have also received booster shots.

It was unclear if the new deaths are the result of the record number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 throughout the omicron surge of infections, which hit Utah in mid-December and lasted through January. Officials have long said hospitalizations, and then deaths, are lagging indicators of community risk. Some had predicted Utah would see a rise in the number of deaths following those days and weeks of record COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The new deaths reported Tuesday include:

  • A Utah County woman, between the ages of 65 and 84, who was not hospitalized at the time of her death
  • A Washington County man, 65-84, not hospitalized
