SALT LAKE CITY — A body was retrieved from the Jordan River on Thursday.

A passerby spotted what appeared to be a body in the river near 700 North about 11 a.m. and called 911. Salt Lake City's Swift Water Rescue Team responded to the area and was able to retrieve the body about noon.

Salt Lake police had not determined the identity, age or even gender of the victim as of midday Thursday. A cause of death and how long the body had been in the water were also unknown. But because a body was found unattended in the Jordan River, the circumstances are considered suspicious and the case will be investigated by the department's homicide unit.

Detectives hope some of their questions will be answered after the state medical examiner conducts an autopsy.
