OGDEN — The construction of a new rapid bus transit system is expected to cause some travel headaches for drivers in the Ogden area to begin the new year.
Crews will close traffic on 25th Street between Washington Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue beginning Monday. The closure is expected to remain in place through "late spring," the Utah Transit Authority said Wednesday.
Only service vehicles, as well as vehicle and business traffic to Porter Avenue, will be allowed. A flagger will direct those drivers during daytime hours from Adams and Jefferson avenues, while through traffic will be detoured to 24th and 26th streets. North and south traffic through 25th Street will be maintained on Adams and Jefferson avenues.
No on-street parking will be allowed on 25th Street throughout the duration of the closure. Drivers will have to park on either Washington Boulevard or Ogden, Adams or Jefferson avenues in the area. Sidewalk access will be "maintained through detours" during different phases of construction, according to UTA.
All of the construction is for the Ogden Express, or OGX, which will be a 5.3-mile route with 22 stations between the Ogden FrontRunner Station and McKay-Dee Hospital, via downtown Ogden and Weber State University. It includes 1.5 miles of dedicated bus lanes.
UTA, Ogden, Weber State leaders helped break ground on the $120 million project in April. It's expected to be completed by 2023. Once in service, the Ogden Express will include 11 electric buses that will run every 10 to 15 minutes on weekdays and 15 to 30 minutes on weekends.
The service will also be free for riders for the first three years as a result of a grant awarded to the project.
