SALT LAKE CITY — Five people have been charged in connection with a chaotic brawl inside a downtown Salt Lake City parking garage that involved guns and a knife and resulted in several injuries.

On Nov. 6, Salt Lake City police responded to the parking garage at 39 East Exchange Place on a report of shots fired. Officers arrived to find Mavrick Sega "in a great deal of pain and in and out of consciousness. He had a stab wound in his back," the charging documents state.

Ieli Tupouniua and another man were also laying on the ground. Tupouniua was shot in the arm and the other man had blunt force trauma to his face and head and was unconscious, the charges state.

As detectives tried to sort out what had happened, they collected surveillance video from the parking structure and cellphone videos from witnesses. One video showed Tupouniua, who was holding a "large knife," and the other man, running toward another group of men that included Sega, Uelese Tone, Satoga Lili'o and Daru Taumua.

Another video taken a short time later showed Tupouniua and the other man retreating from the second group as Taumua "took a shooting stance, aimed a gun at them and fired three shots in their direction," according to charging documents. Police believe Tone, Lili'o and two other unidentified men then pulled the man who was with Tupouniua out of a car and beat and kicked him, according to the charges, in addition to "making stomping motions" on the man's head.

As that was happening, Taumau held Tupouniua at bay with a gun. Tupouniua is seen in a video backing away while still holding his knife, according to the charges. Shortly after, Sega is seen taking the gun away from Taumau, which is followed by two shots being fired and Tupouniua being struck in the arm, the charges state.

Another video showed Sega pulling up his shirt and showing his stab wound to his friends, the charges state.

Lili'o, 30, of West Jordan, was charged in 3rd District Court by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.

Taumau, 30, of Salt Lake City, was charged with three counts of discharging a firearm, a third-degree felony.

Tupouniua, 34, of Magna, was charged with aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, both third-degree felonies.

Tone, 23, of West Jordan, was charged with aggravated assault, a second-degree felony.

Sega, 25, of Kearns, was charged with discharge of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a restricted person, both second-degree felonies; and, discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony.

All charges are subject to gang enhancement penalties if convicted, according to court records. No charges had been filed against the man allegedly pulled out of a car and stomped on as of Tuesday.
