MIDVALE — Police have arrested a man they say shot and killed another man at a wedding in Midvale on Nov. 6, according to a police booking affidavit.
Guillermo Herrera, 19, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Saturday for investigation of murder, three counts of aggravated assault, rioting, obstruction of justice and "transaction of firearm by class 1 restricted person," the affidavit says.
Herrera and two other men arrived at a wedding reception at the Ganesh Center, 145 E. Fort Union Blvd., where police said they began "causing trouble" and were escorted out. While they were leaving, witnesses say a fight began.
Police say surveillance videos show Herrera and the two other men enter the reception before a woman confronted them. Herrera then left, but the two others continued to argue with the woman and another man, according to the affidavit. The three men and other wedding attendees then joined Herrera outside.
Surveillance footage shows a fight start outside the venue, according to police. At one point, Oscar Avila, 28, is seen running to the fight.
"Herrera is seen swinging his arm in (an) overhead motion, striking" Avila and Avila falls to the ground, the affidavit says. The videos also show Herrera continuing to hit Avila, "and a short time later (Avila) is seen laying on the ground and does not get up from that spot," the document says.
Witnesses say they saw Herrera point the gun at three people before pointing it at Avila and shooting him, according to the affidavit. Aliva died from his injuries.
Two shots can be heard in another video, police say, but no video shows the shots going off.
Police arrested another man in connection to the shooting on Wednesday night
Court documents show Herrera was awaiting sentencing in a 2020 shooting that left a man paralyzed when the Nov. 6 homicide happened.
