SALT LAKE CITY — Attorneys asked for more time Friday to look for evidence before a detention hearing is held for Buk Mowat Buk, 22, who is accused of shooting and killing University of Utah football player Aaron Lowe.
Buk was charged on Oct. 13 with aggravated murder and attempted murder, both first-degree felonies; as well as use of a firearm by a restricted person and obstruction of justice, second-degree felonies.
Lowe died from multiple gunshot wounds outside a house party on Sept. 26 after a game by the U. football team against Washington State. Police say the party was initially only for members of the football team, but other people came, including Buk.
Lowe died at the scene. Four bullets were found inside his body following an autopsy.
Fuamoli Pomale, 20, was with Lowe at the party and was shot in the neck and chest. She told to police that the fight began when Lowe was attempting to move his car but four men wouldn't get out of the way. She also said that the shooter came up to them after they had fallen to the ground from the first shots and continued shooting in order to "finish them off," charging documents state.
Multiple witnesses at the party identified Buk as the individual who fired the shots, although charging documents indicate that Buk denied being at the party.
Buk has previously been convicted of failing to stop at the command of police and robbery on two separate occasions. He is still on probation for the robbery charges.
A scheduling conference for Buk will be held Dec. 3, unless prosecutors determine they have had sufficient time for discovery.
