FILLMORE — A man who police say had been drinking and riding ATVs with friends now faces criminal charges for allegedly causing a fatal crash earlier this year.

Clinton Carl Penney, 33, of Meadow in Millard County, was charged Wednesday in 4th District Court with automobile homicide, a third-degree felony, and driving under the influence, a class A misdemeanor.

On Feb. 28, a group of friends were driving four-wheel ATVs on Thorpe Road in Millard County, which is a gravel road. Penney was attempting to catch up to the group ahead of him when the front of his ATV bumped the rear of the second ATV, causing both vehicles to roll, according to the Millare County Sheriff's Office.

Lisle Sunny Scott Peterson, 32, who was in ATV ahead of Penney, was ejected and transported to a local hospital where she died from her injuries on March 3.

Peterson is survived by her husband and three teenage daughters.

"To know Lisle was to know what love was. She cared for her family and friends before caring for herself. Many in town know that when there was a fundraiser, she was one of the first to offer her help," Peterson's obituary states.

Peterson worked as a receptionist at Mountain View Mushrooms, a large grower of fresh mushrooms, in Fillmore.

"For over five years, she became fast friends with all who entered our business doors. She will be missed by each of us here at Mountain View Mushrooms. We offer our sincerest condolences to her family and friends. She made a big impact on the farm and in our community. She will be sorely missed," the company posted on its Facebook page in March.

Correction: An earlier story version incorrectly stated Peterson passed away in May. She died from her injuries in March.
