LEHI — A man who barricaded himself in a Lehi residence after exchanging gunfire with police surrendered himself into custody on Saturday night, according to police.

A neighbor near 81 S. 1675 West Street reported hearing a gunshot from the backyard of a nearby residence on Saturday and police were dispatched for a medical assist about 5:20 p.m., Lehi Police Sgt. Lane Larsen said. Police entered through neighboring backyards to get a better view of the residence, he added.

When police found the backyard of the residence was empty, they set up a perimeter and waited for SWAT to arrive, according to Larsen.

While police waited for SWAT to arrive two shots were heard from within the residence. A short time later, shots were fired from the front of the residence toward police officers, prompting police to return fire, Larsen said.

The man then barricaded himself in the residence where negotiators were later able to talk him into surrendering. Larsen said the man was taken into custody about 8:45 p.m. and transported to the hospital.

Neither the identity of the man nor a list of charges he may be facing was released.
