LAKE POINT, Tooele County — There were some tense moments for a Tooele County couple on Wednesday when a man trying to run from police burst into their home.

The man barricaded himself in a bathroom, leading to a standoff with the Tooele County Sheriff's SWAT team. Karie Ray Williams, 26, of Tooele, eventually surrendered without incident. No injuries were reported.

The frightening ordeal started just before 7 a.m. when sheriff's deputies and Utah Highway Patrol troopers responded to a motel in Lake Point on a report of a suspicious man in possession of a stolen motorcycle, according to a prepared statement from the sheriff's office.

The man ran off before deputies arrived. Witnesses at the motel gave a description of the man to police. Just a short time later, deputies searching a nearby neighborhood spotted someone who matched the description.

"Upon seeing officers coming down the street, the suspect ran into a resident's yard, then entered the home through an unlocked back door," according to the statement. "After entering the home, the suspect confronted the homeowners and told them to be quiet, then fled down a hallway. The suspect barricaded himself in a bathroom."

The two homeowners then ran out of the house and flagged down officers looking for the man.

A SWAT team was called and surrounded the house. After negotiating for about an hour with Williams, who refused to come out, SWAT team members went inside and were able to take him into custody without incident, the sheriff's office said.

Williams was charged in six separate felony cases in 2020 in Tooele County, mainly for crimes involving theft, theft by receiving stolen property, and theft by deception, according to court records. He was given suspended prison sentences and placed on probation as part of a plea deal resolving all the cases at once. But warrants were issued for his arrest in all six cases on March 29 for failing to comply with the conditions of his probation, court records state.

Williams now faces numerous years in prison for violating the conditions of his original sentences, in addition to any new charges that could be filed in connection with his latest arrest.
