TAYLORSVILLE — Two people have been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting in Taylorsville that critically injured a woman.

Gabriel Cearrido, 18, and Isaac Balderrama, 21, both of West Valley, were each charged Friday in 3rd District Court with discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, a first-degree felony; and six counts of discharge of a firearm, a third-degree felony. Prosecutors have requested they be held in the Salt Lake County Jail on no bail.

Both men were inside a sporting goods store in Taylorsville on May 7. Police say Cearrido and Balderrama were with two teens, and a woman was with another person.

Both groups left the store about the same time, and the two men got into an argument with the woman and her friend in the parking lot, according to a police affidavit. Cearrido and Balderrama then allegedly followed the victims in their car.

Near 1600 West and 4270 South, the woman and her friend pulled to the side of the road to let Cearrido and Balderrama pass them, the affidavit states. But as the men passed the parked vehicle, multiple shots were fired, the affidavit states.

A 20-year-old woman in the parked car was struck in the chest and suffered "numerous internal injuries," according to police.

Unified police issued a statement shortly after the incident with surveillance photos of the suspects. Detectives received numerous phone calls identifying the two men, according to the affidavit. The juveniles who were in the car with Cearrido and Balderrama turned themselves in, according to police.

Cearrido, who has a tattoo on his neck, was identified by the victims as the gunman, the affidavit states, and Balderrama was identified as the driver.

Balderrama was arrested Tuesday by the U.S. Marshals' Violent Fugitive Apprehension Team.
