LEWISTON — A 3-year-old child drowned in a river behind their family home in Lewiston Saturday afternoon.
Cache County Sheriff officials say officers were told of a missing child who was last seen on a battery-powered four-wheeler just before noon. The four-wheeler was found in the river behind the family's home. Just before first responders arrived, the child was also found in the river.
Lifesaving measures were immediately started once the child was found and the child was transported to a local hospital, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.
Despite lifesaving efforts by medical staff, the child died at the hospital.
Officials say initial investigation results indicate this is a "tragic accident." However, the investigation is ongoing.
"We would like to remind the public to take this unfortunate event as a reminder to tell your kids you love them, give them an extra hug and kiss, and to always cherish the moment," wrote Lt. Mikelshan Bartschi who offered condolences to the family.
The child's identity was not released.
