Police arrest Ogden man accused of stealing an ambulance

OGDEN — Police on Monday arrested an Ogden man accused of stealing an ambulance.

Mitchell Bryce May, 28, was booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of theft of a vehicle and interfering with a public servant.

On Jan. 3, Ogden firefighters were responding to a medical call at an apartment complex when someone stole their ambulance.

"Due to the original ambulance having been stolen, Ogden (firefighters) had to request a second ambulance to transport the patient to the hospital for treatment," according to a police affidavit, which notes that the theft prevented crews from transporting their patient in a timely manner.

The ambulance was found abandoned behind a house several hours later. Video surveillance was also obtained of the man who stole it.

Just after midnight Monday, police were called to a family disturbance in which May was accused of becoming violent with family members. When officers arrived, they noticed he was in possession of a bag of suspected methamphetamine, a police affidavit says.

"Mitchell's eyes were dilated and he was unable to remain still for any prolonged period of time. Mitchell was not oriented to time or place. The complainant reported Mitchell was becoming violent," according to the affidavit.

When officers attempted to place May under arrest he allegedly resisted, leading to a struggle with officers. After May was knocked to the ground, he kicked an officer several times, the affidavit states.

An officer then used his Taser to "drive stun" May. But police say May then grabbed the Taser from the officer "and discharged the device by pulling the trigger. No officers were struck by the discharged device."

While being interviewed at the police station, detectives were able to determine that May was the person they were looking for in the ambulance theft, according to the report.

When shown surveillance photos from the scene and asked if the photos were of him, May stated, "That sure looks just like me," before finally saying, "If it shows my face then it's my fault," according to the affidavit.

May was also booked into jail for investigation of disarming a police officer, two counts of assault on a police officer, interring with an officer, drug possession and intoxication.
