SOUTH SALT LAKE — Police are searching for a person of interest in a Friday shooting that took place at a South Salt Lake Maverik.

The shooting took place about 6:30 a.m. Friday at the Maverik near 3260 S. West Temple, according to South Salt Lake police.

A man had been shot in the face in the parking lot of the store. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition, but has since stabilized, according to police. He remained hospitalized Monday and has not been identified.

Police identified 40-year-old Justin Michael Brinton as a person of interest in the shooting. He is believed to be driving a grey 2004 Dodge Durango with Utah license plate F141EJ that was captured on surveillance video after the shooting, police said. Brinton is believed to frequent homeless camps in Salt Lake and Duchesne counties, according to police.

Brinton should be considered armed and dangerous, police said. Anyone who sees him should call 911 and not approach him, police said.
