BOX ELDER — A Murray man was arrested last week after a pursuit across the Idaho-Utah border, according to Utah Highway Patrol.
On Thursday, an Idaho State Patrol trooper was following a stolen vehicle on I-84 that was approaching the Utah-Idaho border around noon on that day, according to a statement from UHP that was obtained by KSL on Wednesday. Idaho troopers requested assistance in case the driver crossed into Utah, and Utah state troopers in Box Elder County responded to the border.
When the driver crossed the Utah state line, UHP troopers took over the primary pursuit. Two troopers were positioned 1 mile past the border with spikes, and an additional set of spikes about 5 miles later, the statement says. When the stolen car reached the first spikes, the driver stopped in the lane and attempted to back up to avoid them.
A trooper then performed a PIT (pursuit intervention technique) maneuver and spun the driver around in the stolen car, according to UHP. The driver then regained control and attempted to go back westbound toward Idaho. Then another trooper performed another PIT maneuver on the car, forcing the driver against the guardrail. All three of the troopers then surrounded the driver, who was pulled from the car and taken into custody, officials said.
The statement said the driver admitted to using meth and heroin during the pursuit. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance for evaluation and was later booked into Box Elder County Jail on multiple charges. He has four National Crime Information Center warrants with bail on each warrant set at $50,000, officials said.
One lane of the westbound I-84 was closed for around two hours while troopers waited for wreckers to arrive and tow away the stolen car and a patrol car.
