HEBER CITY — Police arrested a man who they say fired nearly two dozen rounds from a handgun near a residential area, striking three homes. At least one resident said he heard bullets whizzing over his head.
Alexis Garcia, 24, of Heber City, was booked into the Wasatch County Jail on Thursday and charged Friday in 4th District Court with three counts of discharge of a firearm and obstructing justice, both third-degree felonies.
On Nov. 5, about 5:15 p.m., police responded to shots being fired in the Wheeler Park area of Heber City.
"I was informed a bullet had struck a residence in the room where a child was located. The bullet penetrated the home and was located underneath a nightstand. A second caller informed me that they had located a hole on the side of the residence," according to a police affidavit.
"The initial 911 caller informed dispatch that there were shots fired and he could hear the bullets zipping over his head. There was a 10-year-old child feet away from where the bullet penetrated the side of the home."
A third home was also hit by a bullet, according to police.

Police responded to several calls in the Wheeler Park Community on Thursday following reports of multiple gunshots, according to the Heber City Police Department.After Garcia learned that a criminal investigation was being conducted, he sold the firearm, the affidavit states.
"Alexis told his live-in girlfriend that he was afraid because he may be in trouble because he saw a post on Facebook that talked about hitting a house and needed to get rid of the gun. Texts were located on Alexis Garcia's phone where he is attempting to sell the firearm," according to the affidavit.
Officers tracked down the general area where the shots were coming from and found shell casings in a construction area. Based on witness statements and surveillance video, detectives were able to identify Garcia and served a search warrant on his phone.
"The phone showed a Snapchat video showing a Glock with a clear extended magazine. The video shows the Glock firing at a rapid rate due to a modification done to the handgun. The video shows the gun being pointed toward a storage unit business," police wrote in the report.
"I was informed by a detective that a slowed-down video frame by frame was obtained in which 22 shots were counted. Each of these shots is dangerous when shot in the direction of a residential area in the general direction of occupied homes," the affidavit says.
Garcia was arrested on Wednesday.
